Lost your only key?
All-keys-lost jobs are more involved — the immobiliser has to be accessed before new keys can be coded. Smart (proximity) keys vs blade keys
Older cars use a cut blade key with a transponder chip in the head — these are the quickest and cheapest to add or replace. From roughly 2010 onward, more cars use proximity 'keyless' smart fobs that let you unlock and start with the key in your pocket. Smart keys cost more because the fob itself is dearer and the vehicle has to pair it to the keyless-entry and start system, but it's still a job we do on your driveway on most mainstream makes. Should I have a spare before I lose the last one?
Yes — and it's the single best money you'll spend on key work. Adding a spare while you still have a working key is far quicker and cheaper than an all-keys-lost job, where we have to access the immobiliser from scratch. If you've just bought a used car with only one key, or you're down to your last fob, get a spare cut and coded now rather than paying several times more in a car-park emergency later.

Keyless theft and keeping your car secure
If your car uses a proximity 'keyless' fob, it's worth understanding relay theft. Thieves can use a pair of signal boosters to amplify the signal from a fob sitting near your front door, trick the car into thinking the key is present, and drive off — all without touching your key. The good news is it's easy to defend against: keep smart fobs in a Faraday pouch or a metal tin away from doors and windows, and many modern fobs can be set to 'sleep' when left still for a minute or two (we can tell you if yours supports it). When we supply a spare smart key we'll also check your car's security-relevant settings and advise on anything simple you can do. A spare key and sensible storage together are the cheapest insurance against both losing your only fob and having the car taken from your drive.
