A plain-English guide to remapping a BMW 320d (N47 & B47) in Nottingham and Derby: realistic Stage 1 gains, the ZF 8-speed gearbox, cost, reliability and how a mobile remap on your driveway actually works.

The BMW 320d is one of the most common cars we're asked to remap across Nottingham and Derby, and for good reason: it's a brilliant motorway car that BMW has deliberately left a lot of margin in. Whether you've got the older N47 or the newer B47 2.0-litre diesel, a Stage 1 remap turns a car that already feels good into one that feels a full engine-size bigger — without touching a single mechanical part. Here's exactly what to expect if you book one.
Pre-2015 cars run the N47 (177 or 184 bhp depending on year); 2015-on F30/F31 and the G20 run the B47 (usually 190 bhp). Both are superb tuning platforms. From the factory BMW quotes 177–190 bhp and 380–400 Nm, but the hardware — turbo, injectors, fuel pump — is capable of far more than the map asks for. That gap is precisely what a Stage 1 recovers, safely and within BMW's own tolerances.
On a typical 320d we see around 190 bhp lift to roughly 240 bhp, and 400 Nm climb to about 460 Nm. But the headline bhp isn't the point — it's where the torque arrives. The flat spot below 2,000 rpm disappears, the car surges from 40–70 mph in a way that makes overtaking effortless, and because you're no longer working the engine as hard to make progress, most owners see a 3–5 mpg improvement on a steady motorway run. These are logged, repeatable figures on your car, not optimistic brochure numbers.
Almost every automatic 320d uses the excellent ZF 8HP. It comfortably handles the extra torque, but from the factory it's tuned for lazy, comfort-first shifts and will sometimes clamp the engine's torque to protect itself. We recommend the matching TCU (gearbox) calibration alongside the engine map: quicker, firmer shifts, a raised torque limit so the engine map reaches the wheels, and sharper kickdown. We do both in the same mobile visit and match the two files to each other.
A correctly written Stage 1 keeps boost, fuelling and EGTs inside BMW's safe limits, so reliability on a healthy, well-maintained 320d is not a concern — we health-check the car first and won't tune one with an underlying fault. The car stays fully road-legal and passes MOT emissions exactly as before, because nothing in the emissions system is removed or disabled. A remap is a modification, so you must declare it to your insurer; we can provide a written specification for them.
A Stage 1 on a 320d in Nottingham or Derby is typically £300–£350, with the ZF TCU calibration £280–£450 on top if you want it. We come to your home or workplace, run a full health check and baseline log, read and archive your original file, write the VIN-specific map and verify it on a logged drive before we leave — usually inside 90 minutes. No workshop, no call-out charge in our area, and the price we quote from your reg is the price you pay.
The 320d is just the start — the same approach applies to the 118d, 520d, X3 and X5 diesels and the petrol 330i, M135i and M140i. Send your registration on WhatsApp and we'll come straight back with your car's stock figures, the realistic Stage 1 result and a fixed price, then bring the tune to your driveway anywhere across Nottingham, Derby and the East Midlands.
